Title

Bubble Trouble: Exploring Subcutaneous. Emphysema

Abstract:

This presentation on “bubble trouble” will take us back to basics and together we will explore what happens during  subcutaneous emphysema.  Though rare yet can be fatal, subcutaneous emphysema, is a condition characterized by the presence of air in the subcutaneous tissue layer underneath the skin.

It can occur after dental procedures that involve the use of high-speed dental instruments and air-driven devices.  It may accidentally occur after tooth extractions, management of peri-implantitis, peri-mucositis and other periodontal regenerative procedures. During these procedures, there is a possibility that air may be inadvertently introduced into the tissue spaces. The air can then track along the facial spaces, leading to subcutaneous emphysema.

Symptoms of subcutaneous emphysema,  its complications,  its treatment and management if it occurs in our dental offices will be presented.  Prevention is key in avoiding subcutaneous emphysema after dental procedures.
